Some eyewear is made to be worn. Jacques Marie Mage is made to be kept. Rooted in history, handcrafted in Japan, and released in deliberately limited runs, these are frames for those who understand that the finest things are worth waiting for and worth collecting.
About Jacques Marie Mage
Jacques Marie Mage is a Los Angeles-based luxury eyewear brand, founded by French designer Jérôme Mage. Mage began his career designing eyewear for brands in Southern California, before launching Jacques Marie Mage in 2015 with a debut collection of thick, sculpted frames, arriving at a moment when the industry mainstream was focused on minimalist design.
The brand’s guiding philosophy is one of collectability. Speaking to The Business of Fashion podcast, designer Jérôme Mage said he believes the story behind an object is what gives it lasting value. Each pair of glasses needs to be charged up and infused with a story: a story of the past, told in a modern way for a new generation.
That ethos shapes everything from design to distribution, with inspiration drawn from historic events and characters, including the Art Deco movement, the American West, Japanese craftsmanship, and French design
Why choose Jacques Marie Mage frames
Jacques Marie Mage is not a brand for the mass market, by design. Designer Jérôme Mage is critical of the contemporary luxury industry’s shift towards mass production, emphasising that true luxury must maintain an inherent rarity. Every JMM frame is released in limited runs, meaning what you wear is genuinely rare.
Each pair requires a 300-step process enriched by the expertise of nearly 100 artisans over 18 months. The result is eyewear with a depth of craft that is immediately apparent and impossible to replicate at scale. The brand has turned its customers into collectors, with a community of enthusiasts eagerly anticipating each new release not just out of need, but out of genuine passion for the craft.
Jacques Marie Mage Craftsmanship
Handcrafted in Japan using a combination of traditional methods and innovative techniques, Jacques Marie Mage frames use the finest cellulose acetate, a renewable, non-petroleum, plant-based material that is durable, attractive, and hypoallergenic. Frame fronts and temples are cut from 10mm cellulose acetate blocks, then tumbled in barrels of custom bamboo wood chips to create a smooth and shiny finish.
Jacques Marie Mage Collections
The inaugural collection introduced four now-iconic frames, Dealan, Zephirin, Hatfield, and Fontainebleau, and the brand has grown from there through a series of culturally rich collaborations and limited releases. Past highlights include the Taos, inspired by the glasses worn by Dennis Hopper in Easy Rider; a partnership with The Gonzo Foundation referencing Hunter S. Thompson’s distinctive eyewear; and multiple collaborations with actor and musician Jeff Goldblum. Each collection is a chapter and each frame, a collector’s piece.
